What Is Energy Leadership?

Energy is the fuel that determines everything we do, how we do it, and how we experience it. We have all experienced “high” or “positive” energy when we’re feeling motivated, inspired, creative. We feel up to any task or challenge and have a sense of joy. This is called Anabolic energy. We have also all experienced “low” or “negative” energy and are familiar with the destructive effect this can have on our ability to deal with tasks or people. This is called Catabolic energy. One way people experience catabolic energy is by reacting to their circumstances with worry, fear, doubt, anger, and guilt. When the catabolic energy is very high, negativity, conflict and contempt are likely to show up in the person’s relationships.

Another way to understand the difference between these two kinds of energy is to consider the difference between being around someone with positive energy and someone with negative energy. Or, think of organizations where you’ve worked or groups you’ve been a part of. Most of us immediately can recall examples which exemplify Catabolic or Anabolic states because–not surprisingly–organizations, like people, tend to resonate predominantly with either Anabolic or Catabolic energy. Anabolic organizations or groups motivate us, making us want to participate full-out, whereas the Catabolic examples give rise to the popular term “toxic.” They make us stop performing optimally, to say the least, and make us want to run the other way. Not exactly the vision most of us have for our lives!

Leadership is how you interact with everyone, including yourself.  We tend to think of leaders as being heads of organizations, managers, politicians or leaders of some movement. However, parents, therapists and health care providers, solopreneurs, sports coaches, consultants, mentors, partners in relationships, teachers, authors, and others who interact with people on a regular basis are all leaders. In fact, EVERYONE is a leader either by choice or default. Leading is the way we help move people, including ourselves, into action. The question is not whether or not we are leaders, but how well we lead.

No matter how effective or ineffective you currently feel in your life, you can absolutely learn how to decrease your Catabolic energy and increase your Anabolic energy to lead a more fulfilling, inspired, productive, and successful life. Furthermore, when you’re motivated and inspired, everything’s easier. Thus begins your journey to become the Ideal Leader.
